Syria Restores Voting Rights at International Maritime Organization, Returns to Active Role in Global Maritime Governance

The Syrian Arab Republic has officially regained its voting rights at the International Maritime Organization (IMO). On 2 December 2025, Syria voted in the election of IMO Council members for the first time since losing those rights 13 years ago.

The vote took place at the Organization’s headquarters in London during the 34th session of the IMO Assembly.

In this regard, the Ministry of Foreign and Expatriates Affairs reaffirms that the restoration of Syria’s voting rights in the IMO represents a concrete new step toward the country’s effective return to the international stage and active engagement in multilateral frameworks. This development also strengthens Syria’s role in shaping international maritime policies and adopting relevant resolutions.

The IMO is the United Nations specialized agency responsible for the safety and security of international shipping, the prevention of marine and atmospheric pollution by ships, and the regulation of maritime transport. It currently has 175 Member States.
