Syria Evacuation Day

National Day Message by Mr. Muhammad Muhammad, Chargé d'Affaires a.i. of the Syrian Arab Republic to the Republic of Bulgaria

On Saturday, April 17th, the Syrian people commemorated the 75th Anniversary of the Evacuation of the French Colonialists, while they are facing the fierce attack of the new occupiers who wage a deadly war through their terrorist agents and the economic sanctions that target the Syrians in their livelihood.

The analogy between the old and the new colonialists can be explained at best by saying that both invade countries to loot and plunder. Terrorists and their sponsors who are looting the resources of Syria are just like the French occupiers, who, the moment they set a foot in our homeland in 1920, they began to plunder the Syrian resources and crops and ship them back to France.

Ultimately independence was gained in 1946 thanks to the unabated determination of the Syrian national resistance that later set an example for the national struggle throughout the Arab world.

However, over the past ten years our region has gone through exceptional circumstances by all standards. Chaos and instability reigned in many of its countries, and one of the most important reasons that led to this was the emergence and spread of the phenomenon of terrorism that struck Syria, many European countries and other countries of the world, which led to the loss of many innocent lives. In addition to that, there was the external interference in the internal affairs of other countries, whether in direct military intervention or through what has become known as "soft power", in order to impose specific agendas and achieve narrow interests far away from the interests and aspirations of their peoples, in a way that violates the national sovereignty of their countries and the provisions of the international law and the principles of the UN Charter.

Syria was one of the countries most affected by all of this, especially by the scourge of terrorism supported by foreign parties, and the latters' attempt at suffocating the Syrian people by imposing unilateral coercive economic measures which aim at targeting their livelihood and which are in contrast to all values of humanity.

Hence, there is a strong need in these difficult times that the world goes through to enhance the language of dialogue and understanding among our nations on the basis of mutual respect, common interests of all and combating terrorism in a way that contributes to achieving common aspirations and reaching the stability and security we all seek.

The establishment of the diplomatic relations between the Syrian Arab Republic and the Republic of Bulgaria at the level of embassies go back to 1961 and they proved to be traditionally stable and lasting in the years despite the abovementioned harsh circumstances and the deepening humanitarian and economic crisis in Syria in the past decade. The role of the historical ties in this should not be underestimated as well - over the years friendly Bulgaria has warmly welcomed a huge number of Syrians where they studied, raised families and built up successful careers. For its part, Syria also filled the hearts of the many Bulgarians, who worked there, with memories expressing their warmest feelings towards the Syrian land and the hospitality of its people.

Through the years The Syrian Arab Republic has always reaffirmed its commitment to the development of the bilateral ties with the Republic of Bulgaria and its willingness to work with it for mutually beneficial cooperation on different levels and in various fields, and for fruitful communication and coordination in foreign affairs.

The Syrian Arab Republic sincerely believes that mutual political support in the international arena would provide the needed circumstances that may contribute substantially to the further deepening of the traditionally good relations between the two countries. Syria is convinced that once all needed efforts are exerted by both countries for signing or updating various mutual agreements, economic ties in all branches will be once again boosted and strengthened for the benefit of both peoples, and this will inevitably lead to the immediate increase of the bilateral trade and the discovery of the unexplored potential in the trade with goods and services between Syria and Bulgaria.

The Syrian Arab Republic truly believes that the Republic of Bulgaria, as a member of the European Union and other international organizations, and as a country that adheres to the principles of the United Nations and the international law, will take a balanced and positive stance on Syria on both the European and international levels for the benefit of both countries and peoples.
