The United Nations Adopts Resolution Welcoming Syria's Efforts and Commitment to Transparency and Confidence-Building, and Calling for Support for Them

As a result of sustained diplomatic efforts over the past months, the First Committee of the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution this morning with broad international support, garnering 151 votes in favor. The resolution highlights the positive and progressive stage of cooperation between the Syrian Arab Republic and the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW). It welcomes the Syrian government's efforts and its full and transparent cooperation with the OPCW and calls for international support for these efforts. The resolution also underscores Syria's commitment to constructive engagement in efforts aimed at enhancing transparency and rebuilding trust.

The resolution commends the practical steps taken recently by Syria to build a genuine partnership with the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), reflecting a clear and firm political will to move beyond the mistrust of the former regime and establish a professional framework based on mutual respect.

The resolution also underscores the importance of accountability and ending impunity for the use of chemical weapons and calls for support for the Syrian government in its efforts.

During the session to adopt the resolution, Syria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Ibrahim Alabi, expressed his sincere gratitude to the countries that supported the resolution and those that endorsed the existing approach, considering that this support does justice to the victims of chemical attacks and touches the hearts of their families, stressing that the resolution constitutes an important step towards correcting the narrative related to the events in Syria, and highlighting the truth after years of misinformation and ignoring the suffering of the victims, given that history is also written through international resolutions.

The delegate affirmed that Syria is committed to continuing its cooperation with the United Nations and the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), in a manner that upholds its obligations under the Chemical Weapons Convention, strengthens regional stability, and enshrines the legitimate rights of the Syrian people to justice, dignity, and security.

This resolution is the first of its kind since the fall of the former regime, reflecting the international community's stance toward the Syrian government.
